A Note Regarding Motorcycle Trailers
It’s our understanding that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that all trailers sold in the U.S.A., whether they are towed behind your motorcycle or for towing your motorcycle behind another vehicle, must have a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and other important information displayed on the trailer. Trailers are now considered to be vehicles by the DOT and must be DOT FMVSS 218. This is true for all trailers — if someone tells you otherwise, they may be mistaken. “Kit” trailers must also meet this regulation — if the manufacturer tells you they don’t, they may be wrong. But hey, what do I know? For more information, visit the trailer information page on the DOT website. | In the U.S.A., the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is the regulatory agency that makes the laws; for an official interpretation of the law, contact the Chief Counsel of the NHTSA
