TS-801 Dry Film Moly Lubricant

TS-801 Dry Film Moly Lubricant

TS-801 is not a motorcycle chain lube; it’s an industrial product, manufactured by T.S. Moly Lubricants in the U.S.A.

T.S. Moly is a company known to BMW motorcycle owners who have experienced the nightmare known as the spline lube.

The company specializes in manufacturing a wide variety of moly (molybdenum disulfide) pastes, sprays and liquids, used in all types of industrial lubrication applications.

We tried this just to experiment, and because we’re always looking for something new, different, unique and “cross-sector”; that is, a product from one market segment that might work in another.

TS-801 is unique, that’s for sure.

It sprays as a black liquid that dries rapidly into a matte black coating. It looks almost like black spray paint or stove black.

We have no idea whether or not it does the job as a motorcycle chain lube — like any of these lubes and as we discussed on the home page for our 2008 motorcycle chain lube comparison — it’s basically impossible to tell how well any of these products really works to protect a chain against wear.

But TS-801 is used in industry to lubricate chains and sprockets, among other things. It’s supposed to work under high temperatures and extreme pressures. It’s advisable to completely clean the chain of any other oils or lubes before using this product.

Once it’s on, it doesn’t really fling off, which is good. But TS-801 has one of the highest per unit costs of any of the products in this comparison, so at this point, it’s a novelty for motorcycle owners more than anything.
