A Rundown of Motorcycle Intercom and Communication Options with In-Depth, Hands On Reviews from Our Experts

Nothing is better than a long, quiet and solitary ride with just your thoughts and a wide open road in front of you. It doesn’t get any better than that. In the real world things are nuanced and complicated however. From a passenger sitting behind you who has a question, to communicating with other bikes nearby, to Spotify playlists and a wife at home who calls to tell you about something the kids did – there are lot of good reasons to be connected while riding.

Motorcycle intercom and bluetooth communications systems allow you to stay connected. Technology has moved very rapidly and today’s communication systems are affordably priced and work very well. There are so many to choose from in such a wide price range. It’s hard to decide which one to choose. One thing you’ll find about Bluetooth intercoms is that they come with a whole lot of features packed into a tiny housing. In addition to intercom capability between driver to rider, or other bikers, they let you connect to cell phones, GPS devices, and phones.

When reviewing these devices we look at factors like sound quality, voice prompts, comfort and fit, design, effectiveness and lot of other things too. Sound quality is by far the important factor and we look for features that improve sound like noise cancellation to dampen any interfering noises from traffic, rain, wind and other environmental factors. Digital signal processing to help reduce the noise really matters the faster you ride or if you ride in high ambient noise areas like cities.

Riding a bike takes concentration and two hands so voice prompt technology is hugely important too and is getting better every day. You want to operate the headset hands-free so it can be awesome when you find units that are a pleasure to use via voice controls or frustrating when others can be absolutely horrible and unusable with voice controls. Comfort and fit matters so we look at materials and how the units feels while being worn for extended periods.

Cell phone connectivity is the other major performance factor because the whole point of these units is to be able to have connectivity when paired. Some systems mount on your helmet, while others have capability to mount on your belt clip or bike. If the system is big and bulky, you may want the ability to mount it on your bike. You can integrate some intercoms with cell phones so you can talk while you ride. They require special cables or you can get motorcycle intercoms that have Bluetooth capability so they connect to your Bluetooth-enabled phone wirelessly.

If you want music, look for a system that has a built-in FM stereo radio tuner or an auxiliary stereo input for your phone. While most units are universal working with any helmet with clamps or adhesive, some motorcycle helmets come with provisions for Bluetooth kits to reside completely inside the helmet.

Intercom & Bluetooth Reviews

UClear AMP Go and Pro Intercoms UClear has revised its Bluetooth intercom lineup with the new AMP systems. The popular UClear HBC100 (review) and UClear HBC200 (review) will be gone when current stock is depleted. There are now three AMP systems: the AMP, AMP Plus and AMP Pro. That’s more or less a “good, better, best” hierarchy, with the …

You Asked For It! The Interphone Tour is the new top-of-the-line Bluetooth 4.2 intercom system from Interphone. It marks a new direction for Interphone, as the Tour is quite different from the Italian company’s previous intercom systems. The new design is available in three versions: the Interphone Tour, Sport and Urban. Each is built on …

HD Speakers for Intercoms and Audio Devices The UClear Pulse Pro Headset and Pulse Pro Drop-In Speaker kits deliver superb audio. The Packtalk for Smaller Groups The new Cardo Scala Rider Smartpack is nearly identical to the revolutionary Cardo Packtalk intercom system (review). The main difference is that the Smartpack system can connect up to 4 riders in the “Dynamic Mesh Network” rather than 15. Also, the Smartpack range in DMC mode is rated at 5 km …

High-End Bread and Butter. The Sena 10S is the successor to the groundbreaking and hugely popular Sena SMH10 intercom (review), first released in 2010. Sena has released a flurry of intercoms since then (along with other Bluetooth devices) and they had to get this one right. Good news, SMH10 fans: the 10S is better in every …

Max Volume With iASUS EAR3 Micro Amp and XSound 2.1 Speakers The brand-new iASUS EAR3 amplifier is the latest generation of iASUS amps. We reviewed the original iASUS Diablo mobile amp back in 2011 and the EAR3 is an update to that device. The EAR3 uses the same “mini” form factor as the Diablo and it includes …

A Low Profile 10 Series The Sena 10R now holds the middle ground in the new Sena 10 series intercoms. If it looks familiar, you’re right! This is similar to the Sena SMH10R (review), which introduced the low profile format. In this design, the intercom and battery pack are separate modules. Stick ’em on your helmet, …

A Nicely Designed Remote for UClear Intercoms Introduced by UClear at the 2015 AIMExpo (report), the Editor provided first insight into this simple but very functional remote, referring to it as the “Big Button Remote”. And now that we have one in hand for testing, the description is indeed very apt. It has to be the most …

Cardo Packtalk Distance Test Results This is an addendum to the Cardo Scala Rider Packtalk intercom review. webBikeWorld readers had many questions about the range (distance) of the Packtalk system under varied conditions and with different numbers of intercoms in the “Pack”. The Stealth Communications System The Sena 10U deconstructs the physical design of a typical motorcycle Bluetooth intercom system. It’s designed to allow you to hide the various parts inside selected helmets for a sleeker installation. This gives you “bespoke” style system that looks like it was designed by the helmet manufacturer. The battery and CPU …

Sena Fulfills a Wish! The Sena 3S is a fantastic little (and I do mean little) Bluetooth motorcycle intercom system. It does everything the Big Boy systems from just a few years ago did…and then some. And it’s about 1/3 the cost. You can read our complete Sena 3S review for all the details. In that review, …

Next Generation of Motorcycle Communication Systems The Cardo Scala Rider Packtalk is an advanced motorcycle communication system with many new features. The Intercom Video Camera! Is it an InterVid? A VideoCom? We introduced the unique Sena 10C in this preview in October 2014. That was during the official announcement at the 2014 AIMExpo (Report). Now have a pre-production unit undergoing a webBikeWorld review. This is such an interesting product that we’re bringing you a first “Quick Look” and we’ll …

Small Size, Big Features Simple is good (or better) and the new Sena 3S is that for sure. Remember “Murder, My Sweet”? Moose Malloy would say that the 3S is “cute as lace pants”. The Moose is right, of course. But he’s always right. Who’s going to argue with him? The cuteness factor is a …
