Business as Usual
The upcoming Sturgis Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota isn’t until August, but concerns about the rally continuing this year have already been brought up due to the Coronavirus. However, Jerry Cole, the director of the rally, said that he expects the rally to continue as scheduled. He and his staff are planning the rally as if it will proceed without any issues.
To be fair, it is five months out, and the situation with the pandemic could be far different by the time August rolls around. Cole did say that he and his team are not ignoring the issues the virus has caused in the world and monitoring the situation. “We’re hoping that things will get under control, and we will go from there. If things change, we will let people know,” said Cole in an interview with the Rapid City Journal.
For those unaware of what the rally is, it’s a massive gathering of motorcyclists, and it has been going on for decades. It was started in 1938 by the Jackpine Gypsies motorcycle club and it has continued every year since except for a couple of years during WWII. This year should continue on business as usual, but that all depends on how things go in the coming months.
Speaking as one who has been to Sturgis, and really loves the event I think the wise thing to do would be to cancel it.
You might be right Robert. I think they’re waiting to see what happens, but I’m right there with you. Canceling it or at least rescheduling it is likely the smart thing to do
I don’t think we’ll have a good handle on the coronavirus pandemic by then; it’s too soon. There probably is no other choice to be made than to cancel the event until next year, when hopefully our lives will be back to normal and the threat of the virus has subsided.
Hi William, unfortunately, I think you’re probably right.
How do you keep social distancing at 6 ft with millions of people? And be safe these folks are from all over wish I could figure this one out?
Not sure social distancing is a big consideration for this event.
Oh you Pussies, real biker dudes and gals are a resilient group of folks that work their asses off for the first 8 months of the year and look forward to this rally no matter what odds are. Some of you are probably some of those wanna be pussy bikers that trailer their shit! If you’re that big of a puss… just stay on the porch with your puppy and don’t forget to wear your mask!
All good. I’ll leave being macho to times when the word “pandemic” hasn’t been a focal point of every other sentence.
Have fun 🙂
Cancel it this year. It’s the socially responsible thing to do. Not good to sponsor the spread of the virus and the many deaths and challenges that will follow.
It’s totally the safest way at this point and time. For such a great event to end up causing possibly such a huge potential contamination of so many would be a devastating mark on a great event. Post pone, reschedule.
