A Rundown of Motorcycle Intercom and Communication Options with In-Depth, Hands On Reviews from Our Experts

Nothing is better than a long, quiet and solitary ride with just your thoughts and a wide open road in front of you. It doesn’t get any better than that. In the real world things are nuanced and complicated however. From a passenger sitting behind you who has a question, to communicating with other bikes nearby, to Spotify playlists and a wife at home who calls to tell you about something the kids did – there are lot of good reasons to be connected while riding.

Motorcycle intercom and bluetooth communications systems allow you to stay connected. Technology has moved very rapidly and today’s communication systems are affordably priced and work very well. There are so many to choose from in such a wide price range. It’s hard to decide which one to choose. One thing you’ll find about Bluetooth intercoms is that they come with a whole lot of features packed into a tiny housing. In addition to intercom capability between driver to rider, or other bikers, they let you connect to cell phones, GPS devices, and phones.

When reviewing these devices we look at factors like sound quality, voice prompts, comfort and fit, design, effectiveness and lot of other things too. Sound quality is by far the important factor and we look for features that improve sound like noise cancellation to dampen any interfering noises from traffic, rain, wind and other environmental factors. Digital signal processing to help reduce the noise really matters the faster you ride or if you ride in high ambient noise areas like cities.

Riding a bike takes concentration and two hands so voice prompt technology is hugely important too and is getting better every day. You want to operate the headset hands-free so it can be awesome when you find units that are a pleasure to use via voice controls or frustrating when others can be absolutely horrible and unusable with voice controls. Comfort and fit matters so we look at materials and how the units feels while being worn for extended periods.

Cell phone connectivity is the other major performance factor because the whole point of these units is to be able to have connectivity when paired. Some systems mount on your helmet, while others have capability to mount on your belt clip or bike. If the system is big and bulky, you may want the ability to mount it on your bike. You can integrate some intercoms with cell phones so you can talk while you ride. They require special cables or you can get motorcycle intercoms that have Bluetooth capability so they connect to your Bluetooth-enabled phone wirelessly.

If you want music, look for a system that has a built-in FM stereo radio tuner or an auxiliary stereo input for your phone. While most units are universal working with any helmet with clamps or adhesive, some motorcycle helmets come with provisions for Bluetooth kits to reside completely inside the helmet.

A high-quality bluetooth headset lets you chat with your friends and listen to your favourite tunes while you’re cruising down the road, tearing up the track, or ripping through the dirt. This week, Revzilla is offering 30% off on select bluetooth headsets. Explore the list below or …

Cardo Systems is providing discounts on their brand new PACKTALK Headphones for a program called “Cardo Coaches” – and instructors looking for wireless instruction in loud environs will be able to benefit from the opt-in resource.  Cardo Systems’ pedigree in wireless com devices stretches as far back as the first decade of Y2K when they …

“Universal Fit and Small Footprint” Way back in late 2014, wBW got its first look at the original Sena 3S systems announced at the 2014 AIMExpo and while Rick was pretty positive over these early variants, some observations and reservations were expressed in his subsequent Small Size, Big Features review in April 2015. And it …

Getting to Grips with the Sena 10C Evo As so many of us gear up for a new riding season, with related planning that goes with it, there is obviously a new or renewed appreciation for the ability to just get out and ride, whether alone or together, locally, or farther afield. We all have …

Introduction Here we are, one day away from Fall, which usually means cooler nights (bug reduction protocol) and warmish days providing (hopefully) lots of opportunities to continue exploring local highways, roads, secondaries, and passable trails. We can indeed, in our COVID-19 world ride alone but together; don’t stop. And of course, riding is required to …

Introduction In retrospect, I guess the title for this review should have been used for Sena Momentum EVO posting, but it fits here just as well. Sena continues moving forward with some speed, what I call a ‘bit of a tear’, evidenced by the release of these Series 50 systems – the 50R and 50S …

WARNING This product is subject to much controversy and consumer uproar due to the manufacturer’s poor communication and failure to reliabley deliver the product Many people claim to have paid for the Domio but not receive it We have asked Domio to connect with us to present their side of the story, but after an …

Introduction This long-overdue long-term review of the Sena 30K is being finished off as we begin a new year and a new decade and, coincidentally just as Sena announces the new 50 Series products featuring Bluetooth 5.0 and Mesh 2.0. Once the new Sena 50 Series product hit the streets, the 30K system is going …

Introduction With Cardo introducing the 2019 edition of the PACKTALK BOLD, SLIM and FREECOM 4+ systems with Sound by JBL audio – the result of a collaborative Cardo-JBL effort, we wanted to revisit these flagship systems; but getting both systems has and is taking a bit of time. As such, this review covers only the …

Introduction Along with the 2019 PACKTALK BOLD and SLIM products with Sound by JBL, came a very timely accessory kit from Cardo. Originally identified simply as the Cardo Audio Kit, it is now typically identified as the Cardo ‘45mm Audio Set’ – a clearer delineation of what this kit provides. This accessory audio kit is …

First Impressions I’ve been trying to find a way to reliably shoot sharp videos with clear sound while out testing motorcycles since I started writing for wBW a couple of years ago. I haven’t been able to decide which equipment I needed to do it. Last year I gambled on a GoPro Hero 6 thinking …

The EJEAS Quick 20 Systems were provided by EJEAS Industrial for this review Introduction Technology in all forms, with a particular bent for communications, especially wireless forms, along with motorcycling are life-long passions that haven’t been diminished by time. As such, the opportunity to review another new or unknown Bluetooth helmet system is never one …

Sena Gains (a) Momentum Anything to do with technology, motorcycling, and relatedly safety education and training gets my utmost attention – always has, always will. So, when Sena announced the first Momentum helmet in 2017, it got flagged, and Sena’s evolution of this product has been followed with interest. Quite incidentally, in jumping into a …

Introduction webBikeWorld has been evaluating Bikecomm products since around late 2010/2011, in having reviewed the early Bikecomm hybrid wired/wireless BK-01 and BK02 systems and later on, the standalone HOLA BT systems. Some of them are still here in plastic storage containers and a couple of them get charged up and used now and then. Especially …

Introduction As identified in the UClear Motion Series – Motion 6 and Motion Infinity postings, just about everything UClear has marketed or provided for some form of testing has been reviewed by wBW and that includes a broad-range review of the UClear AMP Intercom models in January 2017. And until the release of the Motion …
