It was one wild ride to get through 2020, something that was certainly true at Harley Davison. In March Jochen Zeitz took off his Pumas and swapped them for his biker boots. The new CEO of HD has now been in the big saddle for 9 months, and a busy stretch it was.
Branded as “The Rewire,” changes are in full swing. It is safe to say that the majority of rumors you may have heard or hoped for, will be very hard to put much stock in. The only bike I will say for certain is coming but has not hit its formal introduction is the Pan American, the first Adventure bike from HD. You can have a sneak peek at the end of this lineup, the formal announcement is due February 22, 2021.
HD is going back to basics, regrouping, and moving from the Rewire into the Hardwire. The Hardwire is the plan thru 2025, it includes a 30% reduction of planned models and increased investment in models currently deemed “High Potential.”
Gone for 2021 are all the Street 750’s, Roadster, Deluxe, Lowrider (we still have the S), Breakout, and FXDR 114. It also seems that the rumored Bronx has vanished.
Overall, it is a good thing to see Harley Davidson taking steps to keep themselves the “most desirable motorcycle brand in the world”. That is a corporate vision I am excited to watch unfold.

There is a lot more to the Pan America than has been let out…
It has a lot of amazing features you can’t see from the photos… Some of these put it a top current ADV segment leaders.
I cannot believe that anyone would be seriously considering the Pan-America as it is a totally unproven ADV bike in an already crowded market. There are so many proven ADVs that are at or far less than the 30K price point. Bikes like BMWs 1250, 1000 and 900 ADVs, and of course the entire KTM ADV line-up from their 790 through the 1290s.
Maybe HD should try and sell them as “poser” bikes with CVO and Sreaming Eagle chrome add-ons and metallic cammo paint. I believe that these will only serve to further alienate perspective HD buyers, as they may not want to be the butt of jokes.
We still remember how the Motor Company closed the Buell lines just as they became competitive. And the V-Rods were never even given a fair shake at the dealer level, And then we were “treated” to the entry level 500-750 Street models. These early Street series were a Joke and by the time the 750 Street Rod was truely matured to an exceptable level it was dropped. When the dealer sales team ignores potential buyers because they aren’t looking at Fat Boys or Ultras, the other than “traditional” models are doomed to fail.
My opinion of failure also extends to the Livewire. I’ve seen sales people ignore that model by placing it far away from the sales floor and out of sight of any perspective buyers.
H.O.G. was supposed to be a group of enthusiasts that love and ride HDs, yet they snub Buells, V-Rods, and of course the little Street series. That is counterproductive and will only cause a true disenchantment with HD.
Sorry HD, but the truth isn’t always pretty.
Look at your competition and look at what they have done to secure their share of future markets.
Perhaps H.D. decided to follow through with the Pan America and not the Bronx because the Pan America was about the only thing they had really never tried before and everything else has turned out to be a bust in the current market although I do think from what little bit I saw of the Bronx, it just might have excited some non-Harley-Davidson riders to give good old H.D. a try. We’ll never know it seems.
Just bought my 1st Harley Davidson & my girlfriend already wants to trade up to the trike so we can get out on the road together and being a trike would seem to be quite Abit safer I’ll do it we’ll get the trike so we can start traveling the roads as a couple , bought my 1st Harley at Wrecking Crew H.D. in Johnson City, Tn. ( Formerly Smith Brothers ) great people to work with already building friendships and it’s great to be back on a Bike again ! Thanks Harley Davidson
Bought my 3rd HD this month, 2021 Fat Boy. I haven’t rode a new one in a while, they are so smooth it almost seems like I’m cheating and I bought something other than a Harley. I like what they did with the Fat Boy in 2018 and have been eyeing one for a while. 300 miles down and have been enjoying it. Added the detachable upright, changed front and rear signal to the new blacked out hockey puck LED, swing arm bag, painted the coil and shifter linkage, and added a heel shifter so far. Really like the 240 tire on the rear.
